How to Achieve Effective Acoustic Insulation

 Stopping the propagation of sound from materials or construction resources that pose a reflective obstacle of greater or lesser effect is one of the priority objectives pursued by sound insulation.

Industrial activities generate a high percentage of noise emissions that are especially harmful to health and, therefore, must be controlled according to a variety of parameters. The sound insulation is very important in many aspects of our society, but we are not aware of its significance until we suffer the absence of such isolation. In order to achieve such isolation, barriers of heavy and high density materials are used. At the moment when the sound waves are transmitted to a building structure, they impact generating a structural noise.

The noise can be transmitted through the air and spread between buildings through the enclosures in the form of partitions, slabs, roofs or facades. Faced with this type of  air noise  are the so  – called impacts , generated by the steps of people, displacement of furniture, building facilities or falls of objects that generate such a vibration in the structure of the building that it can become a focus sonorous.

One of the most immediate ways to combat this annoying sound is to interpose a sufficient mass between the emitting source and the receiving source. There is a wide variety of materials that provide air tightness and flexibility. In the event that it is not possible to reach sufficient mass, it will be convenient to complement the acoustic insulation with materials that provide acoustic absorption.

At this point it is convenient to establish a clear differentiation between what is isolation and absorption. While the first term alludes to the ability to prevent the propagation of incident acoustic energy, the absorption concept has as an objective the transformation of part of that incident energy into heat.


To achieve effective isolation, for example, in the case of above-mentioned airborne noise, the primary objective of this method is that the sound waves lose as much energy as possible as they pass through the enclosure. The greater the energy lost, the greater the insulation.

With regard to impact noise, the insulation seeks to cut the path of transmission of vibrations by interposition of elastic materials. In order to achieve adequate  acoustic insulation  in this field, several factors must be taken into account, such as, for example, the structure of the floor, the type of floor covering such as carpets or the characteristics of the noise source (for example , the type of object that hits the ground).

One of the most important stages in the acoustic insulation project   is the follow-up on site. At this moment it is decided whether the calculations prior to the project correspond or not with the final measurement that most public administrations require. One of the first interventions in this case is the incorporation of floating floor, which is usually presented as a concrete slab 5 to 10 cm thick resting on an elastic element, high density rock wool and reticulated polyethylene sheet. One of the priority objectives of this type of elements is to avoid the rigid joints of the floor with the forged and acoustic insulation of the walls, in such a way that any noise is not transmitted by vibration to the adjacent enclosures.

The cleaning at the time of starting up the plastering, floors and ceilings is another crucial point in any work. It must be kept in mind that debris, debris, sand or tools must be kept away from any constructive solution aimed at improving sound insulation. Materials such as, for example, mortar remains can form acoustic bridges. Another error in the start-up of the backings is the fall of the screws between the base wall and the metal profiles.

Another of the most used solutions is ceiling dampers, useful for all types of enclosures, from bars or auditorium rehearsal rooms. Likewise, it must be kept in mind in any acoustic insulation project to apply a layer of mortar, plaster or, even, to screw laminated plasterboard to the slab that serves as a roof. In the case of acoustic insulation on walls, it must be confirmed that there are no gaps or cracks or any breakage of the main base elements of the premises.
